In Residence with

Doron & Daphne Shlezinger

INTERVIEW BY MATTHEW KENNEDY
PHOTOGRAPHY BY TOM ROSS

Doron and Daphne Shlezinger knew it was time to make a change. Their lives had shifted a lot over the years, and as they made their way into retirement, it became clear that one of the best ways to set themselves up for a bright future was to move into a more appropriate home. Doron and Daphne wanted to move somewhere that was tailored for their needs and designed for their future. As it happens, Hudson Green was exactly what they needed.

What was it like to buy a Shustin home?

D.S

We’ve been so impressed by Shustin every step of the way. Everyone we speak to is always professional, but what makes them so great is that they’re an approachable group, they listened to us and we always felt like we were a top priority. We always felt cared for. Knowing they’re still there now to help with anything we may need is great for our peace of mind.

Were there any advantages to buying off the plan?

D.S

You wouldn’t think so, but funnily enough, yes! Buying off the plan meant we could tailor the home to suit our lives. What initially felt like a lack of control actually turned out to be an opportunity to do things our way. We got to speak with Kate Roach, the designer, about all the things we needed—and Shustin was attentive to all our needs.

Were there any specific requests that you made for your home?

D.S

Because of Shustin’s flexibility, we were able to enlarge the basement, add more space to the laundry, and include a second shower and toilet. We also repositioned a wall in the ensuite so we could have more storage in the corridor, and we made lots of minor changes to the kitchen’s layout and cabinetry. It felt like any suggestion we had, big or small, was taken on board.

“Because of this new home’s design, it doesn’t feel smaller. It feels just right.”

Do you find yourself missing a larger home?

D.S

Because of this new home’s design, it doesn’t feel smaller. It feels just right. The larger basement means we have the space needed for our art studio, as well as a desk, couch, extra storage and a second TV. So in this house we can live exactly how we always wanted. The generous outdoor area means we can have a garden without the hassle of constant maintenance. Instead, we have a beautiful collection of plants that keep us connected to nature without taking up all our time.
